New flavours and fresh look from Clandeboye Yoghurt

Food NI Clandeboye Yoghurt, Northern Ireland’s only yoghurt producer, has won business from two leading retailers for three new luxury flavours which are feature a refreshed brand.

The new range from Clandeboye, which is based near Bangor in county Down, has recently been listed by Tesco and Spar in Northern Ireland and joins an established and successful portfolio of Greek style and other yoghurts.

The latest listings for Clandeboye come just a few weeks after the launch of the yoghurts by what has become one of Northern Ireland’s most successful dairy businesses.

The small company has won a string of UK Great Taste and Blas na hEireann, Irish National Food Awards for its established range of premium yoghurts and was last week named Agri-Food Business of the Year in the annual Small Business Awards 2018 organised by Business Eye magazine and the First Trust Bank.

The new Greek style yoghurt flavours are: Raspberry and White Chocolate, Mandarin and Lime, and Mango and Nectarine. They are available in 150g pots (RRP 79p).

The new luxury-style branding features a D&A logo that reflects the crucial role of the Marchioness of Dufferin and Ava in the formation of the business on her extensive estate as a farm diversification project in 2007.

Bryan Boggs, general manager of Clandeboye Yoghurt, commenting of the new products and identity, says: “We’ve been looking at some additional favours over the past few months in what continues to be a very dynamic and competitive dairy category. We also decided to take the opportunity to review our overall branding and to see how best to refresh it.

“The fresh branding, initially for the three new yoghurts, reflects our longstanding focus on premium products offering outstanding taste, consistent quality, heritage and provenance,” he adds.

The yoghurts are hand blended using fresh milk sourced exclusively from the estate’s own pedigree and award-winning dairy herd. An authentic Greek straining technique using cheesecloth is then used to produce the deliciously creamy yoghurts.

The company, which now includes German discounter Aldi in the Republic of Ireland among its customers, produces a full range of natural, Greek style, flavoured and layered whole milk yoghurts for both the retail and food service markets.

Local producers celebrate stunning success at Blas na hEireann Irish Food Awards

Local producers from the Causeway Coast and Glens have proved they’re among the best in Ireland.

In a stunning performance at the Blas na hEireann Irish Food awards, six finalists from the region collected a total of 14 awards.

This included the award for Best New Product which went to Lacada Brewery for their Devil’s Washtub dark ale, named after a rocky inlet on the east side of Ramore Head.

Reflecting on the success, which saw the co-operative collect five accolades, Head Brewer Laurie Davis said: “We were stunned when we won five awards. Very few producers achieved that. I am so pleased for all the co-owners who took a leap of faith when we were starting up and who also put in so much hard work for the brewery. To win Best New Product in Ireland is a great reward for them all.”

For Alastair Crown from Corndale Farm, participation in the awards has opened up some very exciting avenues. Speaking after winning a gold and silver, he said: “We all work so hard to produce unique and high quality products. We were totally overwhelmed when we won the awards and to also receive “Best in Derry” is a huge accolade for us. The real work starts now. We have had a lot of interest from some really high quality chefs and retailers, Harrods and Selfridges to name a few. It is key for us now to build on the success of the awards and really get our award winning produce out there and see sales increase. Exciting times!”

Linda Christie from Ballinteer Farm came home from Dingle with three trophies – the farm’s quail eggs were selected in the Chef’s Choice Category, while their quail meat received a bronze and Best In Farmer’s Market. She is already reaping rewards from their performance: “We have generated new sales already and product enquiries are coming in.  It was a great networking experience and a platform for our products.”

Broighter Gold’s cold pressed oil won a bronze award in its category, and owner Leona Kane said it was a fantastic experience: “There was a lot in our section, so to win anything in Dingle was a huge success for our family business.   But it is also about the networking, and people that you meet when you are away that all add to sales and connecting with the right people.”

For Glenballyeamon Eggs, it certainly was a weekend to remember. Along with a silver award for its free range eggs, the company was also named Best Agri Business at the Causeway Coast and Glens Business Awards. Owner Niall Delargy said: “We are delighted to announce that we have received these prestigious awards, along with back to back Great Taste Awards through the Guild of Fine Food in 2016 and 2017.”

If you’re looking for the best frozen yogurt in Ireland, then Coleraine is the place to go. Morelli’s strawberry frozen yogurt, which is made in the town, scooped gold in its category. Arnaldo Morelli, who attended the awards in Dingle, County Kerry, with his brother Marino, said: “This accolade is testament to the dedication and hard work of both our staff and suppliers. The quality of Clandeboye Estate’s yoghurt complements the strawberries rippled through it perfectly to give our Strawberry Frozen Yogurt its delicious, refreshing and award winning taste.”

All of the successful finalists are members of Causeway Coast and Glens Food Network. It brings together local producers from across the region, and offers a range of support avenues.

Clandeboye Estate signs exclusive £500,000 ALDI deal

Clandeboye Estate Yoghurt in Northern Ireland, has signed a deal with ALDI worth a potential £500,000.

From this month, Clandeboye Estate Yoghurt, Northern Ireland’s only yoghurt producer, will be supplying ALDI with a range of flavoured Greek Yoghurts created exclusively for the supermarket chain using the milk from the estate’s award-winning herd of Holstein and Jersey cows.

The new yoghurts will be retailed under ALDI’s successful “Specially Selected” line of premium private label products that have been created with the aim of adding a little bit of affordable luxury to the weekly food shop.

Following taste tests to create exclusive flavours, the new 200g yoghurts will be hitting the shelves in ALDI stores across Ireland in May.   Based on Clandeboye’s much loved, authentically strained Greek Style yoghurt, customers will be able to treat themselves this summer to three new varieties, Raspberry and White Chocolate, Mandarin and Lime and Alphonso Mango and Nectarine.

“We are delighted to be joining ALDI’s ‘Specially Selected’ family,” says Bryan Boggs, manager of Clandeboye Estate’s yoghurt business.  “Clandeboye Estate Yoghurt has been stocked in ALDI and performing very well for over a year. It’s a great boost to the business to be identified for ALDI’s own brand premium range which includes products sourced from some of the best specialty food producers across Europe.”

Clandeboye Estate estimates that the ALDI contract could potentially be worth around £500,000 a year with supply extending to ALDI’s 129 stores across Ireland. The financial boost will allow plans to progress to expand the business with the building of new production facility on the estate which not only provides increased capacity but importantly will further the estate’s commitment to improving their environmental footprint by making use of Clandeboye’s Anerobic digester for the energy requirements.

Lady Dufferin and Bryan Boggs, general manager of Clandeboye Estate Yoghurt

“Clandeboye Estate Yoghurt was founded on the desire to add value to the milk from our award winning herd and use it to create a food business that would go some way in sustaining this historic estate for the future.  We have come a long way in a decade and as we continue to grow the business with the support of large trade customers such as ALDI, we will be staying true to our roots and environmental values at the heart of our business.”

Clandeboye Estate Yoghurt is the brainchild of Lady Dufferin, the Marchioness of Dufferin and Ava and a member of the Guinness family.  Determined to add value to the high quality milk produced by her award winning herd of pedigree cows and astounded by the fact that yoghurt production had virtually disappeared from Northern Ireland, Lady Dufferin seized the opportunity to develop a boutique yoghurt production business on her country estate.

Clandeboye Estate’s range of Greek style and Natural yoghurts were officially launched in 2008 and have been highly successful in the Northern Ireland market with listings secured in major supermarket chains Sainsbury’s, Asda NI Tesco, Spar, Musgraves and many independent retailers.  The products are also stocked in Fortnum & Mason in UK and Café Sol, Insomnia and Aldi in Ireland.
