Broighter Gold wins business with Sainsbury’s!

Broighter Gold, Northern Ireland’s multi-award-winning rapeseed oil producer, has won its first business with one of the UK’s top supermarkets.

The company, based on a family farm, near Limavady in county Derry, has begun to supply gift packs of its original and infused oils to nine Sainsbury’s stores across Northern Ireland. The attractive pack contains four 150ml bottles at RRP £12.99.

Leona Kane, who founded Broighter Gold in 2011 with husband Richard as a farm diversification project, says: “We were delighted when Sainsbury’s approached us to supply our Christmas ‘golden’ gift pack. This is a very exciting time for our family business. It’s tremendously encouraging our products on the shelves in Sainsbury’s.”

The pack includes virgin cold-pressed oils infused with rosemary and garlic, lemon, chilli, and basil.

Broighter Gold, in addition, is launching its rosemary and garlic, and chilli oils in 500ml bottles.

In addition to its success throughout Ireland and in achieving top international awards for excellence including several UK Great Taste Awards, Broighter Gold supplies its products to La Grande Epicerie de Paris and Brown Thomas in Dublin.

The oils are used by leading chefs, including Dublin’s Clodagh McKenna, as an alternative to olive oil because of the high content of Omega 3,6,9 and Vitamin E and also because rapeseed is probably the most versatile cooking oil. Broighter Gold oil also has half the saturated fat of olive oil.

The small business has won a string of UK Great Taste Awards for the oils produced from oil seed rape grown on the family’s Broglasco Farm, which overlooks Lough

The fertile ground grows high yielding crops of wheat, barley, oilseed and potatoes. Ireland’s greatest find of gold artefacts from the Iron Age of the 1st century BC was found on the farm and is now held by the national Museum of Ireland.

In addition to the development of rapeseed oil, Broighter Gold has expanded into industrial tourism by developing an exhibition centre through the international EconoMusee network that enables visitors to see how the oils are produced and used in cooking.

Local producers celebrate stunning success at Blas na hEireann Irish Food Awards

Local producers from the Causeway Coast and Glens have proved they’re among the best in Ireland.

In a stunning performance at the Blas na hEireann Irish Food awards, six finalists from the region collected a total of 14 awards.

This included the award for Best New Product which went to Lacada Brewery for their Devil’s Washtub dark ale, named after a rocky inlet on the east side of Ramore Head.

Reflecting on the success, which saw the co-operative collect five accolades, Head Brewer Laurie Davis said: “We were stunned when we won five awards. Very few producers achieved that. I am so pleased for all the co-owners who took a leap of faith when we were starting up and who also put in so much hard work for the brewery. To win Best New Product in Ireland is a great reward for them all.”

For Alastair Crown from Corndale Farm, participation in the awards has opened up some very exciting avenues. Speaking after winning a gold and silver, he said: “We all work so hard to produce unique and high quality products. We were totally overwhelmed when we won the awards and to also receive “Best in Derry” is a huge accolade for us. The real work starts now. We have had a lot of interest from some really high quality chefs and retailers, Harrods and Selfridges to name a few. It is key for us now to build on the success of the awards and really get our award winning produce out there and see sales increase. Exciting times!”

Linda Christie from Ballinteer Farm came home from Dingle with three trophies – the farm’s quail eggs were selected in the Chef’s Choice Category, while their quail meat received a bronze and Best In Farmer’s Market. She is already reaping rewards from their performance: “We have generated new sales already and product enquiries are coming in.  It was a great networking experience and a platform for our products.”

Broighter Gold’s cold pressed oil won a bronze award in its category, and owner Leona Kane said it was a fantastic experience: “There was a lot in our section, so to win anything in Dingle was a huge success for our family business.   But it is also about the networking, and people that you meet when you are away that all add to sales and connecting with the right people.”

For Glenballyeamon Eggs, it certainly was a weekend to remember. Along with a silver award for its free range eggs, the company was also named Best Agri Business at the Causeway Coast and Glens Business Awards. Owner Niall Delargy said: “We are delighted to announce that we have received these prestigious awards, along with back to back Great Taste Awards through the Guild of Fine Food in 2016 and 2017.”

If you’re looking for the best frozen yogurt in Ireland, then Coleraine is the place to go. Morelli’s strawberry frozen yogurt, which is made in the town, scooped gold in its category. Arnaldo Morelli, who attended the awards in Dingle, County Kerry, with his brother Marino, said: “This accolade is testament to the dedication and hard work of both our staff and suppliers. The quality of Clandeboye Estate’s yoghurt complements the strawberries rippled through it perfectly to give our Strawberry Frozen Yogurt its delicious, refreshing and award winning taste.”

All of the successful finalists are members of Causeway Coast and Glens Food Network. It brings together local producers from across the region, and offers a range of support avenues.

Hickory Dickory Smoke To New Broighter Oil

Rapeseed oil producer Broighter Gold has launched a new Hickory Smoked product.

The company, which is based on a family farm near Limavady in county Derry, developed the new rapeseed oil following requests from chefs and also to meet the growing market trend towards smoked flavours.

The new Hickory Smoked Rapeseed Oil, also geared towards the BBQ season, is available in 250ml bottes at a recommended retail price of £3.99.

Leona Kane, managing director of the multi-award winning Broighter Gold Rapeseed Oil, commenting on the new culinary oil, says: “We’ve had a number of approaches over recent years from leading chefs for a smoked product and have been working to perfect the recipe for some time. We’ve taste tested the new oil and received very positive reviews from professional chefs as well as home cooks.

“Our research and contacts with chefs indicated a developing interest in oils that add a smoked flavour. The new oil is the outcome of extensive NPD work. It’s also an ideal oil for barbequed dishes,” she adds.

The new oil joins Broighter Gold’s successful range of original Liquid Gold and flavour infused rapeseed oils such as Basil, Chilli, Rosemary and Garlic, Lemon, Thai, and Black Truffle. The family business sells its oils throughout Northern Ireland as well as Great Britain, the Republic of Ireland and France.

Formed in 2010 as a farm diversification project, Broighter Gold has won a string of UK Great Taste and Blas na hEireann Irish National Food awards over the past five years. The company was also won the prestigious Flavours of the Neighbourhood, a UK competition launched by the Hotel Indigo Group, part of the global Intercontinental Hotel Group chain, to find the best artisan food product.

The culinary oils are based on oilseed rape grown on Broglasco, the Kane family farm, in Myroe, near Limavady, which is on the edge of Lough Foyle just above sea level on reclaimed land.  The arable farm covers 800 acres – 180-acres are used to grow rapeseed.

The fertile ground grows high yielding crops of wheat, barley, oilseed and potatoes. Ireland’s greatest find of gold artefacts from the Iron Age of the 1st century BC was found on the farm and is now held by the national Museum of Ireland.

In addition to the development of rapeseed oil, the company has expanded into industrial tourism by developing an exhibition centre through the international EconoMusee network that enables visitors to see how the oil is produced and used in cooking.
